Jobs and AI

One of the things that we would like to do with this blog is educate people on a future with AI.  I believe that one of the things that is very important when thinking about this is what kind of affect it will have on jobs in the future.  Will it take your job?  Will it not? Is there a phantom rat is there not!? (Sorry about the Ratatouille reference, great film by the way, definitely should watch).  With this post we will look into the jobs that might disappear in the future and those that will probably be fine.

Do you remember the graph that was in the post about AI taking over the world?  It's about how much money was invested into AI in the last few years, and it basically says that the investment in AI has risen three fold since 2017.  This could be a pointer to what will happen in the future.

There are no two lists of jobs that AI will replace that are the same, so I've gone through five and have found a few that turn up in most of the lists, and the reasons for them being there, and have made a shot list of five on my own.

1.Receptionists

So, the first job that shows up on all of the lists is Receptionists.  The main reason is said to be automating the jobs that have been done by receptionists until now.  The way that AI would take over would be by doing auto check-ins and orders through communication screens.  I think that these two things are already being used in some places, however, I personally like the human interaction when you're in a hotel or something so I was a bit sad that it showed up so often.

2.Market Research Analysts

Next, we have Market Research Analysts.  Market Research Analysts, are people that look at the preferences of consumers and decide how to change how the companies market their products and services.  However, automated AI can look through the data in just the same way, surveys sent out to consumers can also compile the same data in less time.  Another advantage that AI would have is the human error, an AI robot would be able to create a in depth market report with no errors, purely based on the data, however, humans can miss information, and in some cases have bias toward a product that they find is the best even if it isn't the best choice for the company.  When checking the lists, the word 'comprehensive' appeared many times, the definition for the word, according to the Oxford dictionary, is 'including all, or almost all, the items, details, facts, information, etc., that may be involved' and synonyms for the word include, 'complete' and 'full', which just goes to show how good AI is at collecting data on multiple platforms.

3.Proof Readers

Third we have Proof Readers.  Proof Readers are people who read through essays, books and articles to check for grammatical and spelling mistakes.  As you may know there already many types of programs which do this for people already.  An example of this is Grammarly, which is a popular program that people use to check their writing.  If these programs continue to get developed, then Proof Readers roles will be reduced greatly.  I think that people will tend to lean on AI in this case because of human error.  An AI robot will not make the same mistakes as humans, although the more I think about it I think that a few Proof Readers will remain human, in the near future, because there are certain genres that a AI will not be able to compute, such as Nonsense Poetry.

4.Telemarketing

I think this is one which has already been taking place.  Telemarketing is when people call your home phone to sell you goods.  According to one of the lists, the conversion rate for sales due to a phone call a less than 10%, which I can understand.  Also, many telemarketing services end up telling you to call a different number anyway.  The way that AI would take over this job would be with automated phone calls, and one of the reasons this is thought to be one of the first jobs to go is lack of requirement for social and emotional skill.  Salespeople that are in shops have to talk to people on a human level and persuade them to buy certain products.  However, telemarketers basically repeat a message that their boss gives to them and a robot could do that just as well as a human.

5.Taxi and Bus Drivers

Finally, we have taxi and bus drivers.  Automated cars are said to be able to take on the role of bus and taxi drivers.  Many countries don't let automated vehicles drive on the main roads yet, but the technology already exists, so it could be soon when you get on a taxi that drives its self.

This was a short list of jobs that could be taken over in the near future.  Another few jobs that turned up multiple times include things such as Doctors, Bookkeepers and Security Guards.

Though when looking at the jobs that may disappear, I also could find many good things that AI helps us with now, and things it could with in the future, things such as inserting numbers, tallying up certain things and automating things that tend to take time for a human to do.  These things all have jobs that they will take away from people, but I do think that lots of these things will help in our daily lives.

Since one of the purposes of this blog is to educate you on AI and how to survive in a world where AI is utilized, I would have also made a short list of jobs that will not be taken over by AI.  Same as the list above this one has made up of jobs that appear in multiple lists.

1.Human Resource Managers

I think that this one is sort of self explanatory, you have to be a human to understand human needs.  The help that people need in a work place is something that a computer can not compute.  Human emotions, reasonings skills, personal conflict this are all things that Human Resource Managers must be able to understand, maybe in the far future AI will be able to take over, however, in the near future, this job will be fine.

2.Psychiatrists

Same as the one above, Human Resource Managers, Psychiatrists must be able to connect with other people on a human level.  Human Resource Managers generally deal with human conflicts in the workplace, Psychiatrists take this to another level.  They must understand how the human mind is wired and how people think in different situations, on top of this, they must be able to answer the calls of all kinds of people with different problems, and connect with them.  AI on the other hand, cannot yet express feelings or feel feelings.  It may be able to come up with the best way to combat the problem, but, it may not be able to help people with the way they feel about the entire situation.

3.Writers

One of the main things that writers do is make relatable characters.  This is done so that the person reading the book can either connect with the character, or, imagine what they would do in the situation the character is in.  Writers need to create interesting and engaging characters, with interesting personalities.  AI cannot understand emotion to the level that people do.  This will probably lead less enjoyable books and characters.

Other things that came up a lot were all things that used skills that include human emotions.  Examples of this are things such as all types of managers, who have to understand how the people who work for them feel, Event Planners who have to make things that make humans feel some sort of way, and Teaching, because they have to teach all of the above.  Teaching was thought to be somewhat replicable by AI before the pandemic, but the online lessons and the amount of people who felt that they couldn't learn from the computer seemed to make people think that AI lessons would not be great.

Now that we've looked at jobs that probably will disappear and those that probably won't I would like to look at the number of jobs that AI will create.  The World Economic Forum has stated that 97 million new jobs will be introduced across many fields.  Does this mean that we can go on with our daily lives without preparing for the future?  No, not really, some jobs will disappear and the jobs that are created are said to be things that people will not just be able to do.  We will have to vastly improve our skill set for the future.

What is the time limit? When will AI start taking jobs away from us?  When will we have to start learning new skills?  Well according to the World Economic Forum, 85 million jobs will be taken over by, 2025.  I'll do the math, 12 million jobs will be created for people, but, only for people who revise and improve their skill set for the AI age.

Back to the skills that are going to come in handy when fighting off robots for a position.  First of all, in the list of jobs that won't disappear, one thing that stands out is the fact that jobs that include human emotion are not going anywhere because robots don't understand feelings, so one of the skills we can all improve on is human interaction and understanding how people feel.  Another one is artistic abilities.  It may be easy to say get better at these skills, but these are things that come naturally to lots of people and don't to others, so let's look at the jobs that AI will create and what kind of skills they will require.

As one may imagine lots of jobs to do with data will be created, one of these examples is Data Sourcing, AI might have trouble choosing which places to gather Data from, and this is a job in which you can help the AI that stole your old job.  Data Annotators is another job to do with data.  AI automation works great, but it has to have a trained model, this job is basically a teacher for AI.  Data Analysist is a job in which you look at the data that the AI has brought and asses it.  AI may be able to gather and tell you the info, but you are the one making the main decisions.  Finally, maybe the most obvious, we have AI Engineers.  If AI is used a lot, then people will be trying to create new and better AI all the time, so this might be a competitive one.

After looking at many types of jobs that AI will potentially create, I think that to survive in the AI age one of the best skills one can have is the way that they analyze data.  AI will probably take up the bulk of the work, but the decision making will probably be up to you, so that could be a good thing to work on.  Human interaction and understanding people is also a skill that could come in handy, for people now it may be hard to learn by 2025, however, for younger generations this should be something that they put effort into, since it may be the difference of having your job taken by a robot, or not.  Support providing these lessons should be given to children to prepare them for our rapidly changing world, for themselves and the future economy.

I'm sorry this ended up being quite a long entry.   Here we have answered the questions 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, and 30.  Thank you for reading, and feel free to comment any jobs that you think will disappear and those that won't.

  1. Although this blog entry was quite long, it was very informative, and it was easy to view. Nowadays, some robots can make coffee, bring you to the table, or bring food for you so I was wondering what kind of job the AI will take over. This entry provided an answer to that and wrote about which jobs AI will not take over. I believe receptionists will be replaced by robots mainly because for the hotel check-ins, you have a simple procedure of asking your name, your phone number, and how many days you’re staying which can all be done by AI or tablets. I feel that babysitters or maids would be replaced by human-like robots. This is because although they don’t have emotions, they can bring do everything for you like cleaning, watching the kids, walking the dogs, etc. Your conclusion was nicely written, and I do agree that humans will be the ones deciding.
