Examples of Good and Bad Websites

In this entry, we'd like to introduce you to two good sites and two bad sites relating to A.I.

GOOD👍

・OpenAI

OpenAI is a research and development company. Its goal is to "ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity."

OpenAI is governed by the board of OpenAI nonprofit. I think OpenAI is a good example of a website backed up by well-known trusted people.

  • Chairman and President: Greg Brockman
  • Chief Scientist: Ilya Sutskever
  • CEO: Sam Altman
The non-profit research company OpenAI is co-chaired by Elon Musk. They are invested by companies such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Reid Hoffman's charitable foundation, and Infosys. From OpenAI's sponsorship, we can tell that this website is safe to use with reliable information.

・Future of Life Institute

Future of Life Institute is a non-profit organization. They "work to reduce extreme risks of transformative technologies, as well as steer the development and use of these technologies to benefit life." They not only focus on AI but also on nuclear, climate, and biotechnology spheres.

Although the pictures of the members on the 'about us' page are a bit sketchy, I thought that this institute is reliable from the number of resources we can access from there. Their mission is admirable as well.

The screenshot above is just one section of the resources they recommend. They also introduce us to various videos, media articles, essays by AI researchers, research collections, case studies, blog posts and talks, books, and organizations.

BAD👎

・Analytics Insight

Analytics Insight is an Indian corporation that claims that they are the "world's First Print and Digital Publication focused on Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Analytics." Their market focuses on disruptive technologies. Apparently, they are featured on Reuters, Yahoo finance, Fox 19 Now, and other news sources.

Although Analytics Insight provides good information from time to time, what I found concerning about this company was their 'publish' feature. To submit an interview or news, you need to pay.

I am dubious of the line, "It will then direct you to a payment page". India is one of the most famous countries for phishing. There are many hidden companies disguising as 'proper' companies, asking for you bank account and numbers. Although they have interesting articles, it is sad to say that some of their systems are fishy.

・Reddit

I tried searching 'artificial intelligence' on Reddit. Not only is Reddit a source similar to blogs and other social media platforms, some of their content on this section is NOT related to AI (like this Led Zeppelin T-shirt here).

Although there are various opinions that you can broaden your views with, I think there is too much variety in thoughts from different people. In a platform like this and Twitter, it is hard to know which information is actually accurate. Then again, there is the side of Reddit where some people honestly tells you when the information you are using is not true. One thing we can assure its best to not use Reddit for academic purposes.

From these two examples, we can tell that there are sources which you can rely on for certain purposes, but is also suspicious to use for other purposes. It is really important that we are always careful of fishy websites!
