AI in films and taking over the, WORLD!?

What do you think of when you hear the word AI?

Personally, I think of the Droids in Star Wars.

I think that other people will also think of things such as, Wall-E and the Terminator.

If you don't mind please could you comment what you think of the AI in films.

I found that the AI in the films that I had seen to have two very contrasting views, especially the droids in Star Wars, there are the nice and friendly droids such as R2-D2 and L3 in contrast to this there are also super battle droids and others that enjoy killing people.  However, in Star Wars the droids can be controlled with plugs and other things put into their programs.  This is not the case in Wall-E, where the captain is being controlled by the AI driving the ship, and Wall-E is programmed to do one thing in general, but tends to have human mannerisms.  Despite the nice nature of Wall-E and R2-D2, I think that most people tend to think of AI as that of the ship in Wall-E, who is thinking of the best route for humanity, but the way of thinking is not very human.

In the bord game Warhammer 40k they explain that in the later days of humanity, we manage to create AI, that is so powerful that a full on war goes on with the robots and humans.  In the end the humans end up winning, but it makes you think doesn't it, what are the chances of humanity going to war with a bunch of super robots, or being killed off by AI.

Well, I've actually looked into this a little bit, and ended up not being able to find the information that I wanted, however I could find a few interesting things that may be a bit concerning.  For starters, have any of you realized that AI has gradually been finding it's way into our lives more and more?  Things like cars that can drive themselves, computer systems, and so on.  I've found two graphs that explain the rise of investment in AI.

These are both graphs from Stanford University, and as you can see the investment in AI has been rising steadily over the last two few years, almost quadrupling from the year 2016.

Another thing is the impact that  AI has had on our daily lives, think about it, have you ever just taken the thing that came up on your search engine just for granted?  Well I know I have, imagine if AI could control what we saw on the internet.  Well it can, kind of.  Nowadays, AI search engines are used in almost site.  The AI can rank the sites that are most viewed and the AI thinks has the best information.  It also can check the things that we check and find things for us that it thinks that we would find interesting.  For instance YouTube, have you ever been watching something, and a video that you are interested in pops up? (you can comment these experiences down below).  If AI could control everything that we saw and watched, the influence AI had on people would be huge.  I don't know if it would take over the world but it could influence some very important decisions.

Well this could happen sooner rather than later, just something to think about when you sleep at night.

Thank you for reading.

  1. When I hear the word AI, I thought of Chappie from the science-fiction film CHAPPiE. It’s the eponymous robot created by a robotics expert using a revolutionary new A.I. system. Chappie was capable of thinking for itself and making its own decisions which I think is different from other movies. Back to the entry, I did realize that there is more AI nowadays with autonomous cars, robots, and more. I also see that AI knows what I like on my for you page of social media, posts, and videos that are related to what I’ve liked come up often. Which is kind of scary because they are watching us. As for the blog, I liked that you added graphs of investment in AI which shows the rise of AI.

  2. I really enjoyed reading this post. i love how you brought up some examples of AI with movies. One of the very first films i watched in the cinema was WALL-E, so to see how that is connected to the world of AI is kind of funny in a way? Also, since watching The Terminator when i was really little, in my mind, AI equaled DANGER. Good to know now that that is completely fiction, and that AI in the real world is a much safer and beneficial piece of technology! Also love the inclusion of the picture of roger-roger from Star Wars.
